National Trust Wales Welsh countryside competition

The National Trust are at it again with yet another rights-grabbing competition, this time themed on the Welsh countryside.

Terms and conditions are here and include this interesting clause that permits  sublicensing of all entries:

9. By submitting your photograph to the National Trust you agree to grant the National Trust free of charge the right to publish and the right to licence others to publish the photograph online and in all media as required.

And you'll never guess what! 'The photographs will be judged by Chris Lacey, Manager of the National Trust’s impressive photo library'. Commercial photo library, that is.

Follow up by Amateur Photogrrapher : NT defends image rights rules

Responding to criticism that the rules exploit photographers' image rights National Trust spokeswoman Heledd Jones told us: 'This competition is a great opportunity to showcase the talent of amateur photographers. We want to encourage people to go out to see and enjoy the wonderful Welsh countryside.
She added: 'The winning pictures will be exhibited at the Royal Welsh Show, on our website and, hopefully, in the Welsh media.
'We do need to make sure that we have the right to promote the talent of the winners and, therefore, we ask that everyone who enters is happy for their pictures to be shown in these media.'

Which is utter bullsh*t. If that was all they wanted 'consent for usage in connection with the competition' would cover it perfectly well. The right to sub-license that they are insisting on points to use within their commercial photo library, with NT pocketing all the royalties.

Covered by Amateur Photographer magazine 'National Trust accused of photo rights grab'

Photographer David Dunnico, who had planned to enter, hit out at the rules, telling us: 'Another photo competition, another rights grab by a publicly-funded body. This time the National Trust of Wales don't just want to be able to use your photograph – they also want to be able to license it to anybody they want to for free.'
The Manchester-based photographer added: 'I'm sure it's another case of an organisation not thinking things through, or perhaps it's not thinking the photographer is worthy of his hire.'
