Local Authority buildings
I work as a freelance building surveyor for a local authority in south wales (via a recruitment agency)
As part of my work I tend to take quite a few 'before and after' shots of refurbishmant and new extensions of buildings such as schools and community centres.
I'm am now setting up a Ltd company and would like to use these photographs in an advertising brochure.
Out of courtsey I checked with the Section Head, however he gave a very negative response.
Where do I stand in this? - I took the photos therefore don't I own the copyright?
(the photos do not include any people in them and are mainly external shots of buildings and access ramps - pretty boring stuff really.)
Any help welcome.

Much depends on the way you were employed...
IF you really were a self-employed freelancer; i.e. registered as self employed with HMRC etc... You invoiced the council for your services... AND the terms and conditions of trade and the contract between you and the council simply licensed the images to the them then they're yours...
On the other hand if taking these photographs was part of the duties you performed for the council as an employee under PAYE (whether directly or through the agency) then they're probably theirs!
